Introducing DESQview 2.2 & DESQview 386
Bringing Still More Power to DOS.
~H~P4
More than one hand claps.
Quarterdeck's programming achievements are widely
recognized in the computer industry. But the general
public is not always so aware. At the risk of seeming
immodest, we're taking this space to remember DESQview.

With DESQview you step into the next
generation of personal computing.
The future of personal computing is clear. Easier to
use PCs. More powerful PCs with graphics and text
programs working side by side. Talking to each other.
Multitasking. Windowing. Transferring data. Menuing.
Mousing.
~H~P4
With DESQview you get the next generation computing
capabilities now on your 8088, 8086, 80286, or 80386
PC or PS/2. And you get these powerful capabilities
without obsoleting your investment in DOS, your
favorite DOS programs, or your time spent in learning
and using these programs.
~H~P4
For DESQview today multitasks within 640K and beyond.
It does windows. It transfers data. It dials your phone.
It gives you menus to DOS. It remembers your keystrokes.
And lots more.
~H~P4
Compatibility
So that you don't have to break old habits that are
already producing results, DESQview gets your existing
programs, as well as programs you'd like to own, to
work together--on the same PC and at the same time.
~H~P4
DESQview is so versatile that you can even run programs
written for the graphical interfaces of GEM or Microsoft
Windows simultaneously with other text/graphics programs.
~H~P4
Uniformity
DESQview provides a consistent and uniform interface
from desktop to desktop. Its capabilities extend to a
wide range of machines with an even wider range of
hardware choices while still retaining the same user-
friendly features.
~H~P4
Making DOS Easier
DESQview helps new PC users get up to speed fast.
That's because DESQview lists programs on menus--so
that loading a program is as easy as pointing to the
name of the program to be loaded. DESQview knows where
the program is on disk and the command to load it.
~H~P4
DESQview's DOS Shell
DOS Services, DESQview's menu shell for DOS, gives
you menus and help for DOS commands. DOS Services
even adds features to DOS--like scrolling through DOS
directories and marking files to be copied, erased or
backed up.
~H~P4
Getting Programs to Work Together
DESQview lets you have several programs open at the
same time. You benefit by getting fast access to
programs. Now you no longer have to close one program
before opening another. And you can have several copies
of the same program, using different files, open at the
same time.
~H~P4
Windows
With DESQview you can have a full-screen view of your
program. Or, if you have several programs open at once,
you can view these programs simultaneously, through
windows--windows that are overlapping or tiled. You can
size and move these windows, put thes windows aside as
well as change their colors.
~H~P4
Data Transfer
A benefit from having several programs open at once is
that you can transfer data from one program to another.
With DESQview's Mark and Transfer commands, you point to
the data that you want in another program. Switch to the
receiving program. Then tell DESQview to transfer.
~H~P4
Graphics
DESQview dazzles when running graphics programs. Whether
you have a PC with Hercules, color graphics (CGA),
enhanced graphics (EGA), multicolor graphics array
(MCGA), or video graphics array (VGA), DESQview delivers
the visual verities, the poignant details, the truth in
pixels that clarify the meaning you're after.
~H~P4
From Ventura Publisher to PageMaker, from AutoCAD to PC
Paintbrush, DESQview can handle them. And DESQview
can show them side by side in windows.
But that's not all. DESQview supports the 43-line text
mode of EGA as well as the 50- and 60-line text modes
of the IBM Personal System/2's VGA.
~H~P4
Multi-tasking in 640K and Beyond
DESQview's multitasking capability and performance
increases as you add memory and processor power. In
systems with 640K, you're able to open as many programs
as you want--but only programs that fit in your PC's
640K of memory are actually running. The other programs
are suspended, waiting for your commands.
~H~P4
Expanded (EMS 3.2) Memory Support
If you have an expanded memory board (EMS 3.2), such
as the Intel AboveBoard, you can have several programs,
each using expanded memory for its data, open at the
same time.
~H~P4
Expanded (EMS 4.0 or EEMS) Memory Support
If you have an EMS 4.0 or EEMS expanded memory board,
such as the Intel AboveBoard Plus, the AST RAMpage, or
Quadram EMS+, DESQview supports multitasking beyond the
640K barrier.
~H~P4
Loader Magic
Because DESQview's focus is on multitasking, DESQview
can turn misbehaved DOS programs, which write directly
to the screen, into well-behaved programs that can run
in background and in windows. DESQview's "magic", called
"loader" is the reason why DESQview users on 8088 and
80286 PCs can run 1-2-3 in background.
~H~P4
Customize your PC
One of DESQview's most powerful features is Learn
(keystroke macros). Using Learn you can get DESQview
to remember your keystrokes. You can create program-
specific macros as well as global macros which issue
commands to several programs. You can edit macros as
well as display menus of macros.
~H~P4
The Smaller the Better
Because your favorite programs are getting bigger,
we've concentrated on making DESQview smaller. In sheer
size DESQview is 145K. But on PC-ATs with extended
memory, DESQview's DOS memory overhead is 85K. And on
PCs, PC-ATs and 386 PCs with EMS 4.0 or EEMS memory,
DESQview's DOS memory overhead averages only 10K.
~H~P4
Connectivity to the World Outside
With each DESQview release, you get better connections.
For we continue to improve high speed communications.
Running in foreground and in background. Which means
better communications and increased efficiency both
within a LAN and beyond to the outlying mainframe world.
~H~P4
Programmers Tools
DESQview full Application Program Interface (API)
capability provides enormous benefits to both MIS
and DP departments. The DESQview API allows a program
to interact with DESQview and with other programs
running in DESQview.
~H~P4
The DESQview API
Using the DESQview API, a program can use DESQview to
move, resize, hide, color its windows, create subwindows,
spawn subtasks that run concurrently with the main task,
create menus, use a mouse, & send messages to and receive
messages from other programs. So programs can now act
alone or together, doing chores in silence or in chorus.
~H~P4
The Grandeur of DESQview 386
DESQview 2.2 is its most powerful on 80386 PCs and PS/2s
when used in conjunction with Quarterdeck's Expanded
Memory Manager-386 Version 4.2 (QEMM-386). We call this
combination DESQview 386. DESQview 386 gives DOS
the capabilities of OS/2--and more.
~H~P4
DESQview 386
DESQview 386 not only gives you the multitasking,
presentation management, and data transfer capabilities
built into DESQview, but it taps into the 80386's
powerful features--its virtual 8086 machine architecture
and 32-bit protected mode.
~H~P4
By controlling these 80386 features, DESQview 386 gives
you program protection plus the ability to run multiple
large memory-intensive (15MB in size) 80386-specific
programs side by side with your favorite DOS programs.
Moreover, DESQview 386 lets you run any text or graphics
(CGA, EGA, VGA or Hercules) programs in small windows
and in background.
~H~P4
More than Ever
In summary, the more capability your system has the
more DESQview lets you take advantage of it. And
now you can, with DESQview, do almost anything on
earth.
~H~P4
DESQview has an impressive list of features and
benefits that can only be described as amazing, here
are some things that have been said over the years.
